A REACHING HAND is a charitable organization based in Cape Town, South Africa. We rely on support and donations from individuals and companies. By donating, you support the upliftment of children, youth, single mothers, and families in some of the most impoverished areas and whose lives are a daily struggle. By recognizing the human face of poverty, we are able to provide critical support with compassion as we work relentlessly towards creating impactful and positive change in the many lives we touch.

Children who live in unsafe environments are more likely to experience trauma, which can impact their physical and mental well-being. With the help of our amazing team of donors, we provide the basic needs for children and families.

Poverty can feel like such an overwhelming problem to tackle. It can leave us feeling like our contribution can’t possibly make a difference. As we say at A Reaching Hand, “a drop of rain is insignificant, but together we can make a river.”

Our dedicated team is committed to delivering deep, lasting solutions rather than quick fixes. We prioritize quality over quantity in our impact, as we have found that sustained support can have a lasting effect on the life of a human being. Together, we are making a difference in many lives.

“To break the cycle of poverty, children need safety and nurturing to become the best that they can be.”

EDUCATION & LITERACY PROGRAMS

Our educational programs are designed to meet the needs of all ages, from infants to adults.

We operate three Daycare Centers, taking care of more than 160 children ages 0-6, and offer weekend Art Therapy classes for around 50 children ages 5-16.

For motivated and dedicated students without means, we also provide books, transport, uniforms, internet access, technology tools, and mentoring support.

NUTRITION PROGRAMS

Contributions from our team of donors provide stable and nutritious food, including fresh fruit and vegetables to our nutrition programs.

  • Supplies, water and gardening support to a local garden which supplies our other programs.

  • 3 meals daily for the 160 children and caregivers at three local Day Care Centers and a local Orphanage/Safe House.

  • Food, electricity, and supplies for a local pop-up food kitchen located outside a clinic in a socially and economically vulnerable area that feeds over 3,000 people per month.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

We integrate our own programs with community-led initiatives to cultivate enthusiastic and enduring support from the local communities. Four of our projects were started by women who each saw a need within their own community. We have created long-term partnerships with them, and thereby help these amazing women to run their programs successfully.

  • Our Donors Support:

  • Food, structural improvements including bulletproof walls, building and safety plans, and applications for government funds for an Orphanage/Safe House and 3 Daycare Centers.

  • Appliances, repairs, and running cost support for the Soup Kitchen.

  • Planning, preparation, location rental, food, supplies, and staff expenses for the Art Class.
